How do Authorised Push Payment scams work?

Push Payment fraudsters use sophisticated marketing techniques to entice investors into their scam. Often the most successful push payment frauds ‘mirror’ real-life opportunities, situations and famous names to build credibility. We presently have a glut of frauds around celebrity endorsed cryptocurrency investment scams.

Scammers gain your trust by initially requesting small transfers to invest in cryptocurrency – typically around £250. They may give you access to an online trading account so you can watch your investment growing and allow you to withdraw small amounts to give you confidence in the process. This is generally followed by requests for larger deposits with increased urgency to access increasing profits.

Once you attempt to withdraw large amounts your account will be blocked, asking you to pay withdrawal fees and taxes to access your funds. This is all part of the scam.

What is Authorised Push Payment Fraud?

Authorised Push Payment Fraud, also known as APP fraud, or APP scams happens when fraudsters deceive their victims into sending payments under false pretences to a bank account controlled by the fraudster.

Money may then be transferred into a digital currency exchange to convert the funds into cryptocurrency, and then into a crypto wallet controlled by the fraudsters.

This is different to unauthorised fraud, where the fraudster is able to take money from your bank account without your permission.

Because victims authorise the transactions, believing them to be genuine, banks put up a fight by placing the onus back on the victim. It is our job to prove that you were a victim of criminal deception, and therefore not responsible for the transactions.
